A severe thunderstorm could produce a tornado in the Red Lake region, Environment Canada warns.

The agency issued a tornado warning for the Red Lake - Woodland Caribou Park area at 4:01 p.m. Central Time on Friday.

A thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado with wind gusts of 100 km/h was being tracked nine kilometres southwest of Fletcher Lake at that time, moving north at 50 km/h, said Environment Canada.

Locations impacted in the warning include the areas around Fletcher Lake, Sydney Lake, Right Lake, and Roger Lake.

Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible in the region.

Tornados can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening, Environment Canada said.

Residents in the area are urged to go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows if threatening weather approaches.

Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if possible, the agency advises, or as a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
