THUNDER BAY -- A major road rehabilitation project has gotten underway that will disrupt traffic through the city's south downtown core area for several months.

Crews began digging up May Street Thursday between Southern Avenue and Finlayson Street.

It marks the start of a $2.5 million that will see water mains and sanitary sewer lines along that route replaced.

It will also undergo extensive street-scaping  with new lighting and several trees being planted.

On-street parking along the east side of the roadway is being eliminated.

Work on the project is expected to be complete by the end of October.
