Drivers on the Thunder Bay Expressway can expect a slowdown at the Neebing River bridge until near the end of the month, and then again next spring.
The Ministry of Transportation now says although rehabilitation work on the bridge will finish by this weekend (weather permitting) only the two northbound lanes and one of the southbound lanes will be open to traffic. The remaining southbound lane is expected to be re-opened by the end of the year.
An MTO spokesperson told TBT News no one from the ministry was available to explain why the fourth lane will stay closed longer.
Further delays are also likely when paving work around the bridge is completed next spring.
The $3-million project began in early July, and was initially scheduled for completion at the end of October.
The MTO said required repairs to the concrete on the underside of the bridge turned out to be more extensive than expected.
