Traffic stop leads to impaired driving charges

RED LAKE – An early morning traffic stop has resulted in impaired driving charges for a Red Lake man.

According to an Ontario Provincial Police release, officers initiated a traffic stop on a motor vehicle Dec. 31 just before 2 a.m. along Detta Road in the Municipality of Red Lake.

Police say it was determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol.

The officer made a demand for a Standard Field Sobriety Test and as a result, the driver failed.

He was placed under arrest and returned to the detachment for further tests.

A 26-year-old Red Lake man has been charged with possession of a Schedule I Substance – Cocaine, operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

He was released by way of undertaking for Red Lake court on Feb. 17 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charges.
