THUNDER BAY — City police seized four firearms and arrested two people after a Wednesday afternoon traffic stop.

Thunder Bay police said officers were conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Arthur Street East near Selkirk Street just after 5 p.m., when a white pickup truck with an obstructed licence plate went through a red light at the intersection.

Police said the vehicle was later observed travelling at 70 kilometres per hour in an area with a speed limit of 50 km/h.

The vehicle was pulled over, and police said the officer noticed several signs of impairment in the driver. The driver also did not have a valid licence, police added.

Police said the driver failed a roadside screening test, with a subsequent investigation finding guns and ammunition in the vehicle.

The driver, a 26-year-old from Thunder Bay, is charged with two impaired driving related charges, one count of careless use of a firearm, and four counts each of unauthorized possession of a firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, and occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there were firearms present.

Police said the driver had previously been arrested on impaired driving charges in May.

The passenger, a 24-year-old from Thunder Bay, was charged with careless use of a firearm, along with four counts each of unauthorized possession of a firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, and occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there were firearms present.

Both appeared in bail court on Thursday and remain in custody with future court appearance dates.
