Safer streets were top of mind for councillors Monday as several new traffic initiatives were approved or requested.
Coun. Larry Hebert wanted administration to look at closing Riverview Drive near Arthur Street after receiving complaints from some people in the area that had concerns about speeding.
"It is a real speedway to beat traffic on Arthur Street," he said.
But Coun. Iain Angus disagreed. He didn't want to see the closure because it might hinder members of the public and emergency vehicles that might need the street to stay open.
Coun. Mark Bentz said he's heard about the issue his whole time on council and didn't think that speed was an issue.
"I think the question needs to be asked to put this to rest," he said.
Council eventually agreed on a compromise from Coun. Aldo Ruberto that has administration looking into traffic calming solutions for the area. A request to look into a community safety zone for Gordon Avenue between James Street and Mountdale Avenue was also approved.
Administration will also be looking at solutions for the Valley Street, Jameson Street and Sherwood Drive area after Coun Trevor Giertuga said people in his ward have been complaining about safety issues since a stop sign was removed.
A pedestrian signal and a 40 kilometre per hour speed limit will hit Junot Avenue near Windsor Street when the third phase of construction begins in 2015 after council gave the go ahead. Community groups have been requesting a signal in that area for several years.
And an all-way stop will be coming to the intersection at Mary Street and Edward Street while one will be removed on Leith Street and placed on Syndicate Avenue at that intersection.
