THUNDER BAY – A busy southside street is closed and at least one residential basement is flooded following a morning water main break.

Simpson Street is closed between Northern Avenue and Southern Avenue Monday as crews work to clean up damage from a water main break that happened at about 3 a.m.

The water flow was immediately turned off to limit the damage and plows were working in the morning to clear the buildup of water and slush from the road and sidewalk.

David Warwick, a city water and sewer department supervisor, said the location of the leak has been detected.

“They’ve started excavating already and hopefully by the end of the day we should have the water back on, barring any unforeseen difficulties,” Warwick said.

City personnel on scene said water from the break flooded the basement of at least one Simpson Street home.

Meanwhile, crews are continuing to work to try to fix a break on Cypress Drive that happened Saturday morning.

Warwick said the initial leak detection was not accurate and further work is needed to fill the first hole and make the proper repairs.

“We did get a crew out there (Monday) to dig again and hopefully find the leak this time,” he said.
