Singer Shy-Anne Hovorka has a message.
Family and friends were saddened when Claudette Magne passed away suddenly in June from a heart attack. Hovorka said before Magne died, she wanted to tackle the issue of texting and driving.
Hovorka carried on her mission by performing a music video for her song called Too Young, Too Late.
“Texting and driving is (a major source of deaths among) North American youths right now,” Hovorka said. “We know the video is getting a positive feedback. Yes, it is a quick little text but it can devastate an entire family and community.”
She said they made the music video more about an incident that happened instead of instructing viewers about what they should or should not do.
Hovorka said she used this approach in hopes that it would not make the message sound too “preachy.”
In the video, the passenger actually hands the driver the phone while they’re driving. Hovorka said they did this to show that everyone in the car is responsible for everyone’s safety not just the driver.
With its message in place, Hovorka now hopes that the video will go viral.
...story continues after video:
“If the video gets 200,000 to 1-million hits within the first 48 hours, which has passed already, then it has gone viral,” she said. “When it goes viral, ads get placed on the video and then you start to collect funds from it.
“We are planning on taking those funds and donating it back to Claudette’s favourite charities,” she said. “It didn’t go viral and it didn’t go as big as we thought it would so we couldn’t make these donations before Christmas, but it did get the main message across.”
She added that local school boards, driving schools and the Ministry of Transportation have been in touch to get a copy of the music video.
