THUNDER BAY – Buses in Thunder Bay will stop for a minute on Tuesday, in honour of a slain Winnipeg bus driver.

Fifty-eight-year-old Irvine Fraser was allegedly killed last Tuesday by a passenger at a University of Manitoba bus stop.

The stoppage will begin at 2 p.m., to coincide with the start of Fraser’s funeral service in Winnipeg.

"This is a tragic time for all of us and the members of ATU Local 966 send their condolences to Brother Fraser’s family, friends and co-workers,” said ATU Local 966 president Ken Koza on Monday in a statement emailed to local media.

“This is a dark reminder that transit operators work in, at times, a dangerous and unpredictable environment. There will be renewed conversation both nationally and locally regarding the need to protect transit operators from the verbal and sometimes physical assaults they face while on the job. Everyone deserves a safe public transit system."

Correction: The original version said the stoppage would take place at 1 p.m.
