Transport driver extracted after truck leaves highway

A transport truck driver was taken to the hospital by ambulance after his vehicle veered off of Highway 61 and into the trees along the roadside.

THUNDER BAY -- A transport truck driver was taken to the hospital by ambulance after his vehicle veered off of Highway 61 and into the trees along the roadside.

Emergency response crews extracted the driver from the vehicle, as brush and trees just south of the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre blocked the doorway.

The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

"We used a chainsaw to cut out some trees so we could gain access to the cab and the patient was taken from the cab," said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Captain Jeff Leduc

"It was pretty easy without any snow and it was easy to remove the trees once we got access."

An OPP spokesman said the driver was conscious when he was extracted and that his injuries were non-life threatening.

The investigation is ongoing.
