FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Treaty Three Police are warning the public to be mindful of shifting ice conditions, after officers rescued an individual near Mitaanjigamiing First Nation.
The person was reported missing by members of the First Nation, located about 70 kilometres north of Fort Frances, Thursday evening.
Concerned for the person’s wellbeing, they directed responding officers to tracks found on a trail, which were followed until they ended in slush.
The missing person was eventually found on a nearby shore, which was surrounded by slush.
Police deployed a secondary ice road parallel to the shore to direct an emergency response team to the correct location. The individual was transported to hospital.
“Anyone who decides to venture onto ice-covered bodies of water should do so with extreme caution and be mindful that ice conditions can vary from day-to-day, from hour-to-hour and from one location to the next,” warned Treaty Three Police in a statement Friday.
The force commended Const. Booth for his actions in locating the individual.
