Jim Meikle loves his neighbourhood.
He's lived on Cox Crescent in Grandview for the past 30 years saying it's a nice, quiet place to be. Which is why he found it odd when he saw police cars driving slowly past his house Monday.
"This morning I woke up and I've got a bear in the tree," he said.
Thunder Bay Police Service responded to the call around 10:30 a.m. Monday that there was a bear in the area. The 200-pound black bear took up residence in a tall tree, capturing the attention of neighbours and emergency crews for the next hour-and-a-half.
After being tranquilized twice it looked as though the bear was there to stay. But without warning, he crashed to the ground.
"That was a long fall for that bear," Miekle said.
Wildlife isn't an uncommon sight in the area. Spotting deer is a daily occurrence. And bear are becoming more common too. Neighbours say it's the third time in the last five years that bears have been seen.
Conservation officers tagged the bear before hauling it into a trailer.
They say the bear was likely attracted to the area because of garbage, bird seed and apple trees.
