A Canadian politician and the spiritual leader of the Metis People died while fighting for the recognition of rights for his people 126 years ago.

On Wednesday, a flag was raised at city hall to remember and pay tribute to Louis Riel.  The Thunder Bay Metis Council was joined by dignitaries from the City to fly the flag.

Flags were raised across the country to recognize Riel's contributions and to keep his memory and vision alive.

Wendy Landry is the President of the Thunder Bay Metis Council.  She said a lot of progress has been made in the preservation of the culture of the Metis people.

Landry added that about 2,500 citizens in this region identify themselves as Metis, but she added that the real number is estimated to be four-times that amount.

There is now a two-year waiting list for citizenship to go through the registry.
