Police arrested three Southern Ontario residents Monday evening for drug-trafficking related offences after observing an apparent impaired motorist on the city’s south side.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Uniform Patrol Branch were in the 200 block area of Frederica Street West at about 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25 when they observed a grey sedan being driven erratically.
Police conducted a traffic stop in the 300 block area of Frederica Street West.
An investigation found the occupants of the vehicle, one driver and two passengers, were in possession of narcotics and a quantity of cash believed to have been obtained via drug-trafficking activity.
Police seized a quantity of suspected fentanyl, a quantity suspected crack cocaine, a non-firearm restricted weapon, paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking and Canadian currency.
Police also observed signs the driver may have been impaired. A road-side Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) was conducted, the results of which led to the driver’s arrest on suspicion of impaired driving.
The accused was transported to the TBPS headquarters at 1200 Balmoral Street for further evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert. The DRE confirmed the motorist was impaired by drug.
The passengers were also arrested and transported to the TBPS headquarters.
Isaiah LAVIN, 20, of Toronto, is charged with:
• Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of a Schedule 1 Drug for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
• Obstruct Peace Officer
• Carrying Concealed Weapon
Jana REHOU, 18, of Kitchener, Ont., is charged with:
• Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of Methylenedioxyamphetamine (ecstasy)
• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
• Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired
A 16-year-old Toronto male is charged with:
• Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
• Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
The youth cannot be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
All three appeared in bail court on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and were remanded into custody with future appearance dates.
