The province is making good on a promise to make college and university more affordable in Thunder Bay and Ontario.
Online applications are now available for student to apply for a rebate of 30 per cent of the average cost of their tuition.
Lakehead University President Brian Stevenson told CKPR Radio that the students need the extra support.
“Over the last 25 years, students have been collecting more and more of a debt load for going to university,” Stevenson said.
“A 30 per cent reduction in their tuition fees for those students who are eligible will be a major contribution to reducing the debt load and making university education more affordable.”
To qualify, students must be less than four years out of high school and their parents' income cannot be greater than $160,000.
