THUNDER BAY – A dozen new COVID-19 cases announced on Wednesday has vaulted the District of Thunder Bay past the 300-case mark for January, a single-month high.
The previous month's high was 277, reached last month.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has recorded 306 COVID-19 cases this month, bringing its total to 891 since the first case was recorded in Thunder Bay exactly 10 months ago.
Of the new batch of cases, seven are considered close contact, while two are attributed to an outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail and another is part of the outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.
The remaining two cases are pegged in the no known exposure category.
Sixteen cases in Tuesday’s count are now considered to be resolved, bringing the total number of active cases in the district down to 146, four fewer than the day before.
All 12 new cases reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas, which includes a number of small communities just outside the city.
There were no new deaths reported, a trend that has continued since Jan. 17, when the health unit reported its 25th and 26th death connected to the virus.
