THUNDER BAY -- Another 21 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, bringing the total number of cases since the pandemic began to 1,223.

Another 14 cases are now considered to be resolved, leaving the district with 166 active, confirmed cases, the most since Jan. 29 and the third most yet.

The District of Thunder Bay, which is in Red-Control under the provincial COVID-19 framework, has added 140 cases over the past seven days, an average of 20 per day and gives the region a count of 102 cases per 100,000 during that time frame.

The threshold to return to Orange is 39.9 or fewer cases per 100,000 over a seven-day period.

Sixteen of the latest cases are considered close contact cases, with two more related to an outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail, which has infected 122 inmates and staff since early January.

Another case is related to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, with one pending and one in the unknown exposure category.
