THUNDER BAY — Two Northwestern Ontario organizations came away with awards from the recent 34th annual Northern Ontario Business Awards competition.
Wataynikaneyap Power received the First Nations Business Award of Excellence.
The $1.6 billion power project will connect 17 remote Indigenous communities to the Ontario power grid for the first time.
The project is majority-owned by 24 First Nations in partnership with Fortis Inc. and other private investors.
Work began in 2018 and is expected to be finished by 2023.
The province provided a $1.34 billion loan for construction costs.
Manitouwadge-based Manroc won the Company of the Year (51+ employees) award.
The family-owned contracting company is best known for developing the unique Alimak system in stope mining.
Manroc has been involved in projects around the world.
This year's awards ceremony was conducted under a virtual format, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
