THUNDER BAY — Two people from southern Ontario face charges after being arrested during a police investigation into a home takeover situation.

Thunder Bay police said officers were sent to a residential address in the 200 block of Cumming Street on Friday night to conduct a welfare check.

Police said the responding officers saw two suspects attempting to escape from a window on the top floor of the home. One was taken into custody after he jumped from the second-floor roof, while the other was apprehended going back into the home after having been on the roof for a period of time.

Officers found and seized suspected cocaine, along with cash and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

Devante Jamar Cooper, a 24-year-old from Toronto, is charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds obtained by crime under $5,000, failure to comply with a release order, and obstructing a peace officer.

Payton Jon Wallace, a 20-year-old from Brampton, is charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds obtained by crime under $5,000.

Both appeared in bail court over the weekend and remain in custody with future appearance dates scheduled.

The charges have yet to be tested in court.
