Two dead in Highway 17 collision

A multi-vehicle collision that closed Highway 17 near Vermillion Bay has claimed the lives of a 31-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl.

DRYDEN, Ont. - Two people are dead following a multi-vehicle collision that closed Highway 17 Saturday evening near Vermillion Bay.

According to a media release issued by the Ontario Provincial Police, Dryden and Kenora Ambulance, Machin Fire, and OPP emergency crews responded to a collision at approximately 5:30 p.m. just west of Vermillion Bay, which closed the highway for several hours.

OPP said an east bound SUV lost control and collided with a west bound tractor trailer. The driver and front passenger in the east bound SUV died as a result of the collision and three other passengers in the back seat were transported to hospital with serious injuries and later air-lifted to Winnipeg.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

The driver of the SUV has been identified as 31-year-old Dustin McLaughlin of Portage La Prairie, Man. and the front passenger as 13-year-old Cheyanne McLaughlin of Nipigon, Ont.
