Two in unknown condition after Machar fire

Firefighters rescued two people from home early Sunday morning

THUNDER BAY – Two people are in unknown condition after being rescued from a fire on Machar Avenue early Sunday morning. A dog inside the building has died after apparently succumbing to smoke inhalation.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to reports of a fire on the 100 block of Machar just after 3 a.m. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and “moderate” heat conditions inside the home, where they located and rescued two occupants. An unconscious female was transferred to EMS, while a male occupant was transported to hospital with vital signs absent.

Firefighters extinguished the remnants of the decaying fire and ventilated the building to clear it of smoke. Fire Rescue says it believes the blaze started on the first floor of the two-story home.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The scene is being held by police and fire services as they await an Ontario Fire Marshal investigator.
