SIOUX LOOKOUT, Ont. — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is asking for the public's help as it tries to identify the individuals involved in the wasteful shooting of two moose.

On Oct. 22, 2019, conservation officers received a tip that a cow moose carcass had been found at the edge of a forest cutover off Botsford Road, which is accessed by Highway 642 east of Sioux Lookout.

An investigation determined the animal had likely been shot one to two weeks prior.

It was badly decomposed and had been scavenged by wildlife, so the officers were unable to determine if any of the meat had been salvaged before it was abandoned.

A rifle bullet and a rifle casing were found nearby.

Three days later, another tip was received about a bull moose carcass being found in a forest cutover off Star Creek Road, which is also accessed by Highway 642.

It, too, was badly decomposed and scavenged by other animals.

According to the MNRF, the carcass was less than 100 metres from the road, and would have been easy for a hunter to locate.

Officers recovered a bullet from the remains.

Anyone with information about either occurrence is asked to contact Conservation Officer Trevor Ropek in the MNRF's Sioux Lookout office (807-737-5055), the ministry's TIPS line (1-877-847-7667 toll-free) or Crime Stoppers anonymously (1-800-222-TIPS).
