THUNDER BAY – Another two people have died in Thunder Bay of causes related to COVID-19, as Thunder Bay crossed another dubious pandemic milestone.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced the two additional deaths on Friday, the fifth and sixth in April, bringing the region to 58 since the pandemic began.

The district had eight new cases confirmed, giving it an even 3,000 total since the first one was announced on March 27, 2020.

There was good news.

Ten previously announced cases are now considered to be resolved, leaving just 57 active cases, the lowest number since Jan. 8. It’s just the sixth time in 2021 there have been fewer than 60 active cases in the District of Thunder Bay.

The region’s seven-day, per-100,000 rate dropped to 34.01, also the lowest it’s been since Jan. 8. It’s the eighth time in nine days the number has been below 40, the threshold to return to Orange, if the entire province wasn’t under restrictive stay-at-home orders.

Six of the cases were in Thunder Bay and surrounding area, with one each in a district community and a First Nation community. Four of the cases are deemed to be from household contact, with one related to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, two of unknown exposure and one still under investigation.
