THUNDER BAY - The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced two new confirmed COVID-19 cases Friday. Both individuals are hospitalized with the virus.

One, a man in his 80s, is from a First Nations community within the Thunder Bay district, but has been hospitalized within the Northwestern Health Unit territory, which covers the remainder of Ontario westward to the Manitoba border.

A release from the TBDHU did not specify which community the man is from, or which hospital he had been admitted to.

The second case involves a Thunder Bay-area woman in her 50s, now in hospital at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

The health unit has not yet determined how either of the individuals contracted the virus.

The Thunder Bay district has now had a total of 87 confirmed cases. Six of those remain active as of Friday morning, including four individuals hospitalized with the virus, while 80 are considered resolved. The virus claimed the life of one area man in late April.
