Two new forest fires break out in region

AFFES says fire in Highway 102 corridor was quickly extinguished, but one near Red Lake is not yet under control.

THUNDER BAY – Two new forest fires broke out on Saturday in Northwestern Ontario.

According to the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services, Thunder Bay, the fire located 25 kilometres west of the city on the Highway 102 corridor, a half-hectare blaze, was quickly doused.

However, Red Lake 19 is not under control, burning half a hectare to date some 34 kilometres south of Red Lake.

There are currently five active fires in the Northwest.

Sioux Lookout 8 is 781.2 hectares near Pickle Lake and not under control, while rain helped firefighting efforts near Pikangikum First Nation, allowing crews to make further progress in their attempt to contain the fire.
