Two officers disciplined for discreditable conduct

Officers admitted to striking a violent person
Thunder Bay Police Service

THUNDER BAY - Two members of the Thunder Bay Police Service will be docked one day's pay, and take a four-day mental health training program, after pleading guilty to a charge of discreditable conduct.

Constables Kyle Kehler and Kyla Rutherford were originally charged under the Police Services Act with unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority.

However, the charge was reduced at a hearing on Wednesday.

The case involved a November, 2016 incident when the officers responded to a call from Shelter House to deal with an individual with mental health issues who was acting violently.

The two admitted to striking the man in the face while they tried to transport him to hospital.

Evidence indicated that the man had not taken his prescribed medication, and resisted when the officers apprehended him under the authority of the Mental Health Act.
