Some heavy sentences have been handed down to a group of Thunder Bay drug traffickers after they plead guilty to a number of charges this month.

Tai Ong, 41, has been sentenced to nine years in prison, while 35-year-old Francesco Bennardo will serve 18 months.

The sentences come as a result of a lengthy undercover investigation led by Thunder Bay Police, known as Project Dolphin.

The operation culminated in a city-wide raid in June of 2011, during which eight people were arrested, including six local residents.

About a million dollars worth of marijuana, cocaine, oxycodone pills and hash oil was seized at that time.

Deputy Police Chief Andy Hay said the sentences reflect the serious nature of the crimes.

Members of the Toronto Police, RCMP, OPP, and the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service also played a role in the 16-month investigation.

Earlier this month, 23-year-old Ryan Smith was sentenced to six-years in jail and 37-year-old Eugenio Caruso received five-and-a-half years in connection with the crimes.

Two other men are still before the courts.
