Two snowmobilers missing on Lake Nipigon

NIPIGON - The Ontario Provincial Police are searching for two snowmobilers who have gone missing on Lake Nipigon.

The Nipigon detachment of the OPP were contacted regarding two missing snowmobilers, 51-year-old Gerald Thompson, and 45-year-old Nathaniel Thompson, both of Rocky Bay First Nation. The two men were last seen on Lake Nipigon on the afternoon of Feb. 16.

Police were contacted when the two men did not return to Rocky Bay. The Anishinabek Police Service, the North West Region OPP Emergency Response Team and the Ministry of Natural Resources helicopter were deployed to participate in the search.

On Saturday, an OPP spotter located one submerged motorized snow vehicle in Lake Nipigon and a second set of tracks leading to another break in the ice.

A ground search is continuing and the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit are being dispatched to participate in the search.
