THUNDER BAY – City police officers didn’t have to travel far to investigate a Tuesday afternoon crash.

In fact, they only had to step out the front doors of the Balmoral Street police station to be at the scene. A nearby two-vehicle crash  left one vehicle involved on the lawn in front of the station’s sign.

Traffic Sgt. Glenn Porter said at about 12:45 p.m. a white car was attempting to make a left turn into the station from the northbound lane while it was struck by a black SUV travelling south.

Porter said there were no significant injuries.

The 20-year-old driver of the white car has been charged with making an improper turn.

While Porter admitted having a collision in such close proximity to the station is “unusual,” it pales in comparison to an incident that happened nearly 15 years ago.

In 2000 a vehicle was driven through the front door of the station, coming to rest just before hitting the reception desk. There were no injuries in that case.
