MONTREAL—Unifor members at Resolute pulp and paper mills in Thunder Bay and in Quebec have voted 74 per cent in favour of a new collective agreement with the company.
The union says the four-year agreement will now set the pattern for its negotiations with the rest of the pulp and paper industry in eastern Canada.
It includes general wage increases of 2 per cent in each of the first two years and 2.5 per cent in each of the last two years.
There are also hourly increases for skilled trades workers and members working in production.
Unifor said in a news release that the collective agreement, in addition, provides improvements in the pension plan and insurance benefits.
"In the current context, we can say we've obtained a good deal," said Unifor spokesperson Renaud Gagne."
Resolute issued a statement Tuesday welcoming the ratification.
"We are pleased with the support expressed by our employees...The collaborative environment we enjoy today is built on mutual trust and transparency," said Yves Laflamme, president and CEO.
The agreement covers workers at seven Resolute mills.
