THUNDER BAY -- Union Gas has donated $5,000 worth of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue’s SAFE program.

The units will be provided to homeowners who require assistance with the acquisition or installation of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their residences.

The program, which began a year ago, helps homeowners who have financial or physical barriers to ensure their homes are compliant with the Ontario Fire Code.

“The SAFE program allows us to help homeowners that require assistance to meet Fire Code regulations,” said Fire Chief John Hay in a release issued by the city.

“Smoke alarms provide the early warning needed to safely escape a fire and only CO alarms can alert you the deadly presence of CO.”

Giving something back to Thunder Bay was the reason behind the donation, said Union Gas’ utility team lead John Gould.

At Union Gas, the safety of our employees and our communities is our most important core company value. And we share that commitment by supporting much-needed programs like SAFE that helps us all stay safer,” Gould said.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue took the opportunity to remind residents the law requires them to have working smoke alarms on every of their home and outside sleeping areas.

Carbon monoxide detectors are also required outside all smoking areas if a home has a fuel-fired appliance or an attached garage
