THUNDER BAY -- A gas line rupture reported earlier Thursday morning appears to be under control, says officials with the gas company.
Just before 10:30 a.m. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters responded to reports of a gas-line leak on Oliver Road, just west of the Thunder Bay Expressway near the Can-Op gas bar.
Firefighters at the scene told tbnewswatch.com that it appears the line was struck while work was being done on a nearby fibre optic cable.
Union Gas officials arrived on scene shortly after firefighters and began working on repairing the leak. The gas company officials, just before noon, indicated that everything appeared to be under control.
Early reports indicated that a nearby home needed to be evacuated following the discovery of the leak, but that evacuation appears to have been cancelled before any evacuation occurred.
Officials later said that while there was a strong odour in the area due to the leak, it posed no threat to nearby residents.
