The remaining Canada Day fireworks will be used for a waterfront grand opening event, city officials confirmed Friday.

While a Canada Day fireworks display began at Marina Park on July 1, poor weather conditions forced the display to wrap up prematurely. That left the city with a cache of fireworks and no clear answer about when to use them.

City officials announced Friday that the fireworks would be used later this year during a grand opening event for the waterfront. When that event will take place is still unknown, but it will likely be held sometime in December.

The city promises to make more announcements, which will contain more details about the waterfront grand opening, over the next several months.

Before making the announcement Friday, city officials had thought about using the Canada Day fireworks at a Summer in the Parks event. The need for additional staff, security and funding for that to happen ultimately led the city to scrap those plans.
