Update: Highway 590 could stay closed for up to 3 weeks (2 Photos)

Flooding created a large chasm across half the width of the road.

KAKABEKA FALLS, ON — Detour signs are posted on both sides of a washout that has closed a section of Highway 590 west of Kakabeka Falls.

OPP announced the closure Monday evening between Adrian Lake Road and Boreal Road.

It could last up to three weeks, according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation, but the exact duration of the closure has not been determined.

The MTO says flooding eroded the northbound lane of the highway and undermined the southbound lane at the same location.

Photos show a large chasm stretching from the centre of the road well into the right-of-way on the east side.

Highway 590 connects Kakabeka Falls to Nolalu where it terminates at Highway 588.
