THUNDER BAY – Three people, two police officers and a pregnant woman, were injured following a Memorial Avenue crash Tuesday morning.

Police say at about 10:40 a.m. two officers were doing a routine traffic stop on Memorial Ave near Third Ave.

One officer exited the cruiser to issue a ticket to the driver of a vehicle they had stopped. While walking back to the cruiser that officer spotted an approaching blue pickup truck.

The officer believed he was about to be struck by the oncoming truck, so he jumped between the cruiser and stopped car to avoid the pending collision.

Instead, the pickup truck was driven into the stopped cruiser, which pushed it forward and struck the police officer.

The officer outside of the cruiser was taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with unknown, but non-life threatening injuries.

The officer inside the cruiser was treated for some minor neck injuries, and a pregnant woman passenger of the pick-up truck has been taken to hospital to be medically checked.

The 20-year-old male driver of the truck was uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation.
