THUNDER BAY — Two American fishermen have received fines totalling $1,500 after they were caught using a forest access road that's closed to public vehicular traffic.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports that in May 2017, conservation officers investigated the activities of a pair of anglers from Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

They had been fishing in the Brightsand River area, about 140 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay.

The officers determined that the men had travelled on the Brightsand Road on May 23 in order to access their fishing destination.

The road is closed to the public in order to promote remote tourism operations in the area.

A Justice of the Peace in Thunder Bay has fined each of the men $750 for violating the Public Lands Act.
