GRAND PORTAGE, Minn. -- A male U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was found fatally shot at the Grand Portage Port of Entry.

A statement from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office say the wound appears to be self-inflicted.

Police were called to the border crossing, known as Pigeon River on the Canadian side, at about 6 p.m. CDT on Sunday.

The officer’s name is being withheld while an investigation and autopsy is completed.

“This is an extremely tough loss,” said Sheriff Pat Eliasen in a release issued Monday afternoon.

“He was well known and respected in the community and protective service agencies, and our hearts and prayers are with his family, colleagues and community during this difficult time.”
