FORT FRANCES -- United States Border Patrol agents detained seven people for illegally entering the United States from Ontario.

The incident occurred on Saturday, March 24 when agents spotted five snowmobiles crossing the international border on Rainy Lake near Drywood Island.

The island is just south of Sandpoint Island Provincial Park, east of Fort Frances.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the investigation led the agents to an area lodge, where they determined the seven individuals were all American citizens who had been fishing in Ontario.

Three of them claimed to have been working as fishing guides, and the other four were clients.

The guides were cited for failing to report arrival in the U.S., while the clients were released with a warning.

Failure to report at a U.S. Port of Entry can result in fines starting at $5,000, as well as the seizure of vehicles or boats.

In this instance, the Border Patrol seized the five snowmachines.
