THUNDER BAY – Those born in 1951 or earlier can now make bookings for COVID-19 vaccination appointments in both the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and the Northwestern Health Unit.

Appointments can be booked online through the provincial system or at 1 (833) 943-3900 as of 8 a.m. Friday.

The Northwestern Health Unit warned Friday that availability of vaccine clinics would initially be limited.

Previous clinics have quickly booked up in the Thunder Bay area.

The province moved to open vaccine booking to those 70 and above in eight health units in total Friday, while the Toronto and Peel health units opened booking to those 60 and above.

As of March 31 at 8 p.m., over 81 per cent of Ontario residents 80 and over had received at least one dose of the vaccine, and more than half of residents aged 75 to 79, the provincial government reported Thursday.

As of Thursday, nearly 35,000 vaccine doses had been administered to over 31,000 people in the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, which serves 149,936 residents (including those under 16, for whom no vaccines are yet approved).

Over 11,000 vaccine doses had been administered in the Northwestern Health Unit, which serves 82,231 residents.

Note: This article has been updated to include information on limited vaccine availability in the Northwestern Health Unit. The information from the health unit was under embargo until 10 a.m. EST.
