UPDATED: Vehicle knocks over hydro pole

Thunder Bay Police say motorist drove with a frosted windshield

THUNDER BAY -- Police have charged a woman with driving with an obstructed windshield after her vehicle knocked down a hydro pole, taking several north-side residences off the electricity grid on a frigid Thursday morning.

The single-vehicle collision occurred on McIntyre Street between Algoma and Ruttan streets.

Thunder Bay Police said the driver of a Mustang convertible lost control, leaving the vehicle with extensive damage and the utility pole leaning at a 45-degree angle.

The motorist escaped injury.

According to police, the car's windshield was covered in frost, so the driver's view was impaired.

The woman faces numerous Highway Traffic Act charges.

A charge of driving with an obstructed windshield is rarely laid in Thunder Bay, as police usually issue an initial warning to drivers.

A Thunder Bay Hydro spokesperson said three customers were affected by the power outage that resulted from the collision.

The utility pole had to be replaced, a procedure that was expected to be completed sometime Thursday afternoon.
