A seven-year-old-boy was able to walk home with his father after a van struck him while riding his bicycle across the street.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to the crash just before 11 a.m. on Saturday. Police directed traffic along River Street between Court Street and Cumberland Street while EMS paramedics looked after the boy.

After a few minutes, paramedics released the boy with a bandaged leg.

Sgt. Andy Clark said the boy was riding his bike in the parking lot of the nearby school when he went across the road and was hit by the van. He said the boy was lucky that he didn’t receive more serious injuries.

“He had some small scratches on his knee and shin but he’s alright,” Clark said. “He’s very lucky because it’s heavy traffic on River Street today. He had his helmet on, which is good but he’s really lucky when he came out of there that he didn’t get hit a little harder.”

Clark wanted to remind everyone to wear their helmets and get off their bikes when crossing the street.

No charges have been laid and the investigation is ongoing.
