Vesperini scores twice, Stars end four-game slide

SPOONER, Wisc. – The Thunder Bay North Stars four-game losing streak came to a screeching halt on Friday night.

The Superior International Junior Hockey League team traveled south of the border and came away with a 7-4 win over the Wisconsin Lumberjacks, scoring three times in the second period to overcome a 2-1 deficit after 20 minutes.

The Stars had given up 22 goals in their previous four games, scoring just five times.

Lou Vesperini had a pair for the North Stars, giving him seven on the season. Jack Michaelis, Raj Sangha, Dylan Bertrand and Anthony Kuzenko had their other tallies.

Salvatore Poggiali had two goals and a helper for the Lumberjacks.

Conner Lemieux took the win in nets for Thunder Bay, good on 29 of 33 shots faced, while Kyler Lowden was tagged with the loss for Wisconsin.

The North Stars improved to 8-6-0, while Wisconsin dropped to 5-8-1. The two sides meet again on Saturday.

Kam River 4, Fort Frances 1: The visiting Fighting Walleye won for the seventh straight outing, scoring twice in the second and adding two more in the third to erase a 1-0 deficit through one period.

Jeremy Dunmore, Carson Gorst, Alex Enegren and Colton Crysler had the Fighting Walleye goals. Ethan Elgie had the only goal for Fort Frances, who dropped to 2-8-0.

The Fighting Walleye and Lakers tangle again on Saturday night.
