UPSALA, Ont. — Video of a frightening incident on the Trans-Canada Highway near Upsala has ramped up the debate about traffic safety on northwestern Ontario roads.

The video, posted Sunday on Facebook, shows transport trucks forced to the side of the road as a cube van passed a tractor-trailer while other vehicles were approaching from the opposite direction.

According to a post under the name of Cynthia Tobin, she had been following a westbound convoy of commercial vans whose drivers, she said, engaged in "a long string of very dangerous manoeuvres."

Tobin said the risky driving started when the vehicles left the parking lot of a Thunder Bay shopping centre.

"These clowns kept stopping...and then darting back into traffic. Several [other] trucks had to hit their brakes hard" to avoid hitting the cube vans, she wrote.

Tobin said this happened multiple times.

After the passing manoeuvre which came close to ending with a collision 20 kilometres east of Upsala, she said, she and two other drivers contacted the OPP.

According to Tobin, OPP planned to send a cruiser eastbound to meet the convoy, but by Ignace–100 kilometres west of Upsala–no police vehicles had been spotted.

She said that's when she realized "nothing would be done."

A spokesperson for the OPP could not be reached Monday for comment.

Tbnewswatch attempted to contact Tobin directly, but was unable to reach her.
