A Hearst man who survived a bear attack on his 45th birthday says he'll be more cautious on future hunts.

Dramatic video posted to YouTube shows 45-year-old Richard Wesley being knocked to the ground by a bear whose speed caught him by surprise during a May 17th hunt near the Fire River.

Wesley captured the images with a head-mounted video camera.

He was able to fend off the attack while the bear was on top of him by jabbing at its nose with the arrows he held in his hand.

The incident left Wesley with no serious injuries but in a temporary state of shock.

He told Tbnewswatch he believes a bear he killed during a subsequent hunt last week is the same animal that attacked him.

"I definitely won't get under 20 yards (from a bear) again. Maybe next spring I'll have my brother or somebody I trust hunting with me," he said.
