MANITOUWADGE, Ont. — New video has surfaced showing a violent start to an encounter between two lynx on a logging road in the Manitouwadge area earlier this month.

The incident was recorded by Kathy Hudson, who was en route via Sonley Road to a work site about 40 kilometres north of Manitouwadge.

"When I saw it was two male lynx, I knew it wasn't going to be pretty," Hudson said Monday in an interview with Tbnewswatch.

"One of them kept disappearing into the tree line, and the other one – a great big one – he was on the road and he was spraying and stuff, and I thought 'something's not right here,' so I stopped at a clearing. I knew something was up," Hudson said.

Shortly after she started to record the confrontation, the cats engaged in a violent but short-lived brawl.

Hudson, who hunts and traps, believes the larger lynx was defending his territory, and the other one was trying to move in.

A lengthy period of loud hissing and spitting followed the brief fight, but no other bites or blows were inflicted.

Hudson said that as she continued her drive to her job site, she spotted another lynx just another kilometre away.

"There's lots of lynx in the area right now, so I think there's lots of this going on," she added.

A group of southern Ontario hunters who also arrived in time to witness the last part of the standoff, shared their video with tbnewswatch.com earlier.
