THUNDER BAY -- A filmmaker born and raised in Thunder Bay accepted a Canadian Screen Award on Tuesday night for the Best Documentary Program.
Michelle Latimer is the writer, director and producer of the Viceland documentary series Rise, which investigates environmental rights struggles involving Indigenous people.
Latimer is of Metis and Algonquin descent.
She studied filmmaking at Concordia University in Montreal and founded Toronto-based Streel Films in 2008.
On its website, the company describes Rise as a "breakout Indigenous resistance series."
The Canadian Screen Awards are presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
