City police had to use a Taser to arrest a man who twice tried to attack officers with a weapon.

Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service say officers responded to an unknown problem shortly after 12:39 a.m. Thursday in the Balsam Street area.

After arriving, responding officers were confronted by a man who attempted to strike one of the officers with a shovel.

The man fled, but was located a short distance away by a second police officer.

Police say the man then produced what they describe as a “large edged weapon” and attempted to stab the officer.

The man’s attack proved to be unsuccessful.

Police say officers then successfully deployed “a conducted electrical weapon” against the man.

Neither the officers nor the suspect were injured during the kerfuffle.

Police say a man has been taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and that charges are pending.

Police did not release the name of the man they arrested.
