THUNDER BAY — Fans of the Wake the Giant music festival will have to wait another year for its return engagement,.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the postponement of this year's event, which was scheduled for Sept. 19.

The inaugural festival drew about 4,000 fans to Marina Park last September, where they enjoyed entertainment by Wolf Saga, Coleman Hell, July Talk and Metric.

The festival was created as a way to show Indigenous youth from remote northern communities that they are welcome in Thunder Bay, and will be embraced when they come to the city to attend school.

In an announcement Wednesday, the organizers said they wish they could bring the festival, its cause and its message to the waterfront again this fall, "but with current conditions due to the pandemic it's just not possible. Health and safety is our number one priority, always."

All current ticket holders will be automatically refunded.

The statement said the organizing committee is working to create an even bigger Wake the Giant event on Sept. 18, 2021.

In the meantime, they're inviting the public to join the movement and help create a more welcoming and inclusive city for Indigenous people.
