THUNDER BAY — After a string of three consecutive warmer-than-normal months this summer, city residents can expect a cooling-off period this week.
Environment Canada is currently forecasting average-to-below-average temperatures from Thursday through Saturday.
The normal high for this time of year is about 20 C, but the thermometer will only get to 13 C by Friday.
Showers are also possible from Wednesday night through Friday, but meteorologist Peter Kimbell said summer is not quite done in Thunder Bay.
"A couple of nice days in store for the short term, but the air mass is going to change Wednesday night, and people will wake up Thursday morning to rain and cooler temperatures going forward for a few days. Temperatures will be cool throughout the weekend but gradually moderating as the next week rolls by, so the warmer weather is not gone for good."
According to Environment Canada data released Tuesday, the average temperature at Thunder Bay Airport during the month of August was about a degree higher than the long-term average.
June and July were also nearly two and three degrees warmer than normal respectively.
In terms of precipitation, only 57 mm was recorded at the airport last month, down significantly from the usual total of 88 mm.
