Washout causes temporary closure of McVicar Creek multi-use trail

'In the interest of safety, we're trying to keep people of that trail," city spokesperson says

THUNDER BAY — A lengthy section of a popular recreation trail in the city remains closed in the wake of a rainstorm last week.

The storm caused some erosion on the multi-use trail along McVicar Creek, between Court Street and Algoma Street.

Pending the completion of repairs, the City of Thunder Bay is asking the public to refrain from using that section.

"A small section of the trail has been undermined," said Werner Schwar, supervisor of parks and open space planning for the city. "Right beside the river, there's a section where the trail is close to the wall along the river. Because of the high water or overland flow, a chunk of that stone wall got washed away."

Schwar said the water also undermined some of the asphalt on the path, "so in the interest of safety, we're trying to keep people off that trail."

The city hopes to get a contractor to the site Wednesday to do repairs.

Schwar said if that happens, then the trail should reopen on Thursday.
